Idly Sambar / Idly Batter Sambar

My Grandma often make this sambar for idly. We really love this sambar with soft idlis. This Sambar is different from usual tiffin sambar, this invvolves the addition of idly batter to the sambar which gives unique taste to the dish. This is one of the best combo for idly/dosa. This tastes good if u make it bit spicy. Addition of more green chilli n cilantro gives nice flavor and taste to the sambar.

Idly sambar
  1. Toor dal     150 gm
  2. sambar onions   15 no.s or 1 and 1/2 big onion (cut in length wise)
  3. Tomato  1big riped

  • When it is done mash dal lightly and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a vessel ,add all tempering ingredients one by one.
  • Then add remaining onions, green chillies ,curry leaves, few coriander leaves, sprinkle some salt and saute nicely.
  • now add chopped tomatoes ,when it gets soft add cooked toor dal and 1cup water, (or more to ur desired consistency) few chopped cilantro.
  • Let it boil for some 5 minutes ,after that pour the idli batter gently to the boiling sambar.
  • Stir it gently and allow to cook for some 2-3 minutes.
  • Add remaining coriander leaves and stir well.
  • Now the tasty idli sambar is ready to serve.
  • Perfect combination for idly and dosa.

After adding idly batter to the sambar,do not cook for long time or not more than 3minutes.
It will get more thick and sometimes get burnt at the bottom also.

    1. I haven't tried with moongdal, But guess Moongdal sambar will also tastes good this way. If using moongdal only 1 tsp idli batter with couple of spoons of water and add it to the boiling sambar. If you try this sambar with moongdal please let me know how it turned out to you.
