Vegan Fish Fry Recipe / Indian Style Fried Tofu / Crispy Masala Fried Tofu

Crispy Tofu Fry

Vegan Fish Fry/Tofish Fry Recipe is a healthy and tasty Appetizer prepared using Tofu. This is almost similar to our South Indian Fish Fry recipe with Ginger, Garlic and other Spice powders. We include Tofu regularly in our meal and often make this simple Vegan Fish Fry/Crispy Fried Tofu and have it for lunch or Dinner along with some salad. Unlike Paneer, Tofu doesn't have great taste and flavor, so we prefer to add up spices and fry just like Fish Fry and hence I named as Vegan Fish Fry. Here I am sharing two ways of making Vegan Fish Fry, one is shallow fried with dry flours coating and other one is just roasted with less oil and no flours coating. Now off to the recipe..

  2. Corn Flour    1 Tbsp
  3. Oil     as needed to Shallow Fry

Notes:
Use Extra Firm Tofu for this recipe.
You can cut into any desired size and shape. I like to cut them like strips so easy to apply masala and fry them. Use hands to apply masala to the Tofu strips and marinate for minimum 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.
If you have sensitive skin to chilli masala paste use food safe gloves to apply the masala.
I used Store bought 65 Masala powder(Aachi Brand) you can use any available brand.
To replace 65 Masala Powder, follow this recipe.
Instead of Tofu you can try this same recipe with Paneer also.
Coating in Rice & Corn Flour gives nice crispy layered Tofu but you need to shallow fry so the outer flour layer is cooked well.
But without flour coating you simple toast in tawa with few tsp of oil, this also give you nice crispy tofu but spicy just like Fish Fry.
Shallow or Tawa Fry both method works great and gives you spicy & tasty Fried Tofu.

Method
  • Press Tofu for 20-30 Minutes to remove excess moisture and pat dry Pressed Tofu and cut into long strips.
  • In a mixing bowl, add ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, chilli powder, kashmiri chilli powder, pepper powder, garam masala powder, salt, chicken 65 masala powder, oil, lemon juice and mix everything well.
  • Add 1-2 tsp water to make it to a thick smooth paste. Do not add more water.
  • Now apply the prepared chilli masala paste to the cut Tofu Strips, take each piece and apply using hands this way tofu gets coated well with the masala.
  • Let the marinated tofu strips rest for minimum 30 minutes to max to 2 hours or overnight in the fridge.
  • Just before frying, take rice flour and corn flour in a small bow mix well and dip each strips in the flour and coat all sides well.
  • Heat oil in a pan, when its hot add the flour dusted Tofu Strips and fry on all sides until crisp and golden brown.
  • Once done remove from the pan and drain it in paper towel.
  • After that Serve the Hot Vegan Fish Fry with some onion slices and lemon wedges.
  • For a healthy less oil Vegan Fish Fry :
  • Heat few tsp of oil in a pan, when its hot directly place the marinated tofu pieces and toast in medium heat oil until the masala is cooked well and tofu turns crisp and fried well.
  • That's it ..Vegan Fried Tofu ready serve hot with some grilled onion & Capsicum slices.
