Onion Kara Chutney Recipe

Onion Kara Chutney is an easy chutney that can be prepared in 10 minutes. No fancy ingredients just regular red onion is fine and is perfect accompaniment for Idli / Dosa / Adai / Paniyarams. I prepared this chutney to go with Wheat Adai Dosai/Dalia Adai Dosai. I used Guntur Chillies so the chutney got nice color and it was spicy too. Make this chutney little spicy to balance the sweetness from onions. Tastes best with hot hot idlis. Give it a try and let me know how it turned out to you. 



Onion Chutney Recipe
Prep Time : 5 Minutes | Cook Time : 10 Minutes or less

Ingredients
  1. Oil 1 tbsp
  2. Channa dal 1 Tbsp
  3. Red Onion 2 medium size
  4. Dry red chilli 5 or 6
  5. Tamarind small piece
  6. Tomato 1 small
  7. Garlic 1 clove
  8. Salt to taste
To Tadka
  1. Oil 1-2 tsp
  2. Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
  3. Urad dal 1/4 tsp
  4. Curry leaves few
  5. Hing a pinch
Method
  • Wash and chop onion and tomato roughly.
  • Heat oil in a pan, when its hot add channa dal fry till light golden color and add dry red chillies, garlic and stir fry.
  • And then add onions and saute in medium heat for a minute then add tamarind piece and saute nicely until onion turns soft and light pink.
  • After that add tomato, sprinkle salt and cook covered for 1-2 minutes or until tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
  • Allow the onion-chilli-tomato mix to cool down completely.
  • Then grind it to a fine coarse chutney using little water.
  • Now transfer the ground chutney to a serving bowl.
  • Heat oil in a tadka pan, when its hot add mustard seeds, urad dal and fry until all mustard seeds popped and dal turns light golden brown, add curry leaves, hing and fry well.
  • That's it add the tadka to the Onion Chutney, mix well and Onion Kara Chutney is ready to serve.
