Kara Pori

Kara Pori/Masala Puffed Rice Recipe is a spicy, crunchy, tasty and healthy snack Perfect to munch on anytime. If you are looking for a quick guilt free evening snack, then this Kara Pori recipe is one of the perfect choice to make and enjoy with a cup of tea. I make this Kara Pori & Masala Makhana often at home and either one of them will be in the snack Jar anytime.

Even my Kids love this Kara Pori & Masala Pori but without much peanuts. For them I mix some Kara Boondi or Sev with Kara Pori. This time I don't have any of them in hand, so made it a simple kara pori with lots of peanuts, Almonds and some fresh crushed garlic which is the star of Kara Pori Recipe.

Kara Pori Recipe
Prep Time : 1 Minute | Cook Time : 5-6 Minutes
Recipe Category : Snacks | Makes  3 and 1/2 cup

Ingredients
  1. Puffed Rice/Pori      3 cups
  2. Peanuts   1/2 cup or more
  3. Dalia/PottuKadalai    2 tbsp
  4. Almonds, chopped  2-3 Tbsp(optional)
  5. Garlic     4 or 5 fat cloves.
  6. Turmeric Powder  1/4 tsp
  7. Kulambu Milagai Thool    1-1.5 tsp
  8. Salt   1/4 tsp or to taste
  9. Chaat Masala   1/4-1/2 tsp
  10. Hing  a generous pinch
  11. Coconut Oil   1-2 Tbsp
Notes:
If the Pori/Puffed Rice is not crunchy and fresh, first dry roast in a kadai for 4-5 minutes then start making kara pori. Here some brands have fresh crunchy pori and some brands has a weird smell and won't be crunchy. I either dry roast first or spread in a baking sheet and bake it in toaster oven in warm mode(less than 250 F) for 6-8 min. Then will use the baked pori to make Kara Pori/Masala Pori etc.
I Used Kuzhambu Milagai Thool for making kara pori, You can use Kashmiri chilli & little bit of Sambar Powder. OR just Red chilli powder alone.
If you don't like garlic skip it and make it with other spices combo.
I prefer coconut oil, but you can use any oil of your choice.

Method
  • Heat oil in a big kadai/pan, add garlic and fry for a minute.
  • Then add peanuts, almonds, roasted gram dal/dalia and fry it well till it gets roasted well n crisp. Fry everything in low-medium heat.
  • Then add Turmeric powder, salt, chilli powder and stir fry everything well.
  • Now add rice puffs and keep stirring in medium heat for 4-5 minutes and then check for salt, if needed add now and 1/4 tsp chaat masala and mix everything well.
  • That's it...Kara Pori ready. After cooling transfer it to an air tight container.
