Brinjal Black Eye Peas Biryani / Brinjal Biryani

For a change tried Biryani with Brinjal and Black eye Peas. This was really different and from our usual vegetable/ non veg biryani. Brinjal flavor was lightly dominant and also i added one small potato which enhanced the taste and flavor of biryani. I used to Electric Rice cooker to make this Biryani that was quick and easy method. And also in this way brinjals and potato didn't turn mushy and was firm enough and tender. Try this and let me know h it turns out to U. The recipe as follows...

Ingredients
  1. Basmati Rice    1 and 1/2 cup (if measured with 160 ml cup)
  2. Brinjal    5 medium (small purple color brinjal)
  3. Black eye Peas    1/4 cup (cooked or canned)
  4. Potato    1 small (diced)  or 1/8 cup
  5. Onion    1 large (sliced)

  4. Green chili   2
  5. Fennel seeds    1/2 tsp
  6. Cilantro    1/2 cup or 10-12 stems

  2. Fennel seeds    1/4 tsp
  3. Clove    4 no.s
  4. Cinnamon    2" stick
  5. Cardamom    3 no.s
  6. Bay leaf     2-3 small one

Method
  • Soak Basmati rice for at least 20-30 minutes before u use.
  • Grind all the ingredients under " to wet Grind" using 2 tbsp water to a fine smooth paste and keep ready.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add the tempering ingredients and fry lightly.
  • Then add ground masala paste and saute until raw smell leaves, followed by onions, turmeric powder and green chili.
  • Saute them for another 1-2 minutes and then add tomatoes and saute until it turns soft and mushy.
  • After that add chopped brinjal and potatoes and stir fry for 2 minutes.
  • Then add black eye peas, cumin powder and garam masala powder and stir fry everything for 2-3 minutes or until the masala blend completely with the vegs.
  • Now transfer everything to rice cooker, add enough water, chopped cilantro leaves and salt, stir well and cook until done.
  • That's it...Tasty and Flavorful Brinjal Black eye peas Biryani is ready, Enjoy with boiled Eggs and Raitha.

Notes:
Instead of Brinjal, you can use any vegetable, fried paneer, soya chunks, mushroom anything...likewise black eye peas can be replaced with green peas, black beans, or any desired legume.
Half cooked or just soaked black eyes is best. If using canned ones, drain the water and use it.
Adjust green chili according to your taste. The above measurement will give u a medium Hot Biryani.
