Vazhakkai Varuval - Chettinad Style

Hello dear buddies, wishing y'all a happy friendship day. Its better to late than never..so here's my belated wishes to you all. Hope you had a very great weekend with your friends & family.
Coming to today's recipe -Vazhakkai varuval chettinad style, actually this is a chettinad chicken varuval recipe. I changed this to a vegetarian varuval with Vazhakkai. So spicy n flavorful varuval. Adjust the spices to your taste..All I can say that this is a must try recipe :) So good with any variety rice or Rice with just sambar/Rasam.
Ingredients
  1. Vazhakkai/Plaintain   1 no.(sliced)
  2. Onion   1 medium(sliced or cut in length wise)
  3. Dry red chillies   2 no.s(broken)
  4. curry leaves   1 twig
  5. Pepper powder    to taste
  6. Salt    to taste
  7. Oil   1 tbsp
For Marination
  1. Lemon    1/2
  2. Curd     1 tbsp
  3. Turmeric powder   1/4 tsp
  4. Red chilli powder    1 and 1/2tsp
  5. Coriander seeds    1 and 1/2 tsp
  6. Pepper corns     10 no.s
  7. Ginger   2" piece
  8. Garlic   3 cloves
  9. Fennel seeds    1 tsp
  10. Cumin seeds   1 tsp
Method
  • Wash and cut the vazhakkai in to slices.
  • Grind all the ingredients under " for marination" from turmeric to cumin seeds to a fine paste n keep aside.
  • Now take a wide bowl, add vazhakkai slices, ground paste ,lemon juice n curd mix everything well and rest it for at least 15 - 20 minutes.
  • After that, heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds n allow to splutter then add curry leaves, red chillies n onion, saute for 1 minute.
  • Then add the marinated vazhakkai slices and cook in low-medium heat till the raw smell leaves n the vazhakkai turns light crisp.Lastly add some pepper powder and fry for few minutes .
  • Thats it ..spicy n tasty vazhakkai varuval is ready .

Note:
Do not cook covered.Don't add water also it gets cooked with the marinated moisture itself.
adjust spices according to your taste n need. You can also try this varuval with any veg like potato, broccoli, cauliflower, taro root etc.
I used 1 medium vazhakkai/raw green banana.i didn't use curry leaves( not in hand) but i mentioned ..it gives nice flavor n taste n as for chettinad dishes curry leaves are must .
