Chayote Chutney / Chow Chow Chutney Recipe

I have posted Chayote Paruppu Thuvaiyal for rice in my previous post and now chayote chutney for Idly/dosa varieties. I love trying new chutney recipes with vegetables rather than same onion-tomato chutney. This is very simple and tasty chutney, same like regular onion tomato chutney. I seasoned the chutney along with roasting ingredients then blended. You can add tadka separately too. We enjoyed the chutney with Adai Dosai.

Ingredients
  1. Chayote/chow chow    1 cup(diced)
  2. Onion  1 medium(roughly chopped)
  3. Tomato   1 medium(roughly chopped0
  4. Coconut   2 tbsp(shredded)
  5. Tamarind     small piece
  6. Ginger   1" piece
  7. Green chillies    4-5 no.(adjust to your taste)
  8. Curry leaves    1 sprig
  9. Coriander leaves    few
  10. Chana dal    1 and 1/2 tbsp
  11. Mustard seeds   1/2 tsp
  12. Oil    2 tsp
  13. Salt    as needed
Method
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and wait till pop and add chana dal and roast lightly.
  • Then add onions, curry leaves, ginger and green chillies stir well and fry for 1 minute.
  • And add diced chayote, saute till chayote gets 3/4 th cooked, then add tomato and saute till it turns soft.
  • Lastly add the coriander leaves and coconut saute for few seconds and turn off the stove.
  • Allow the content to cool completely and grind to a little coarse paste along with the tamarind paste.
  • Then transfer the chutney to a serving bowl and serve as a side dish for idly/dosa/adai/paniyaram etc.
  • I served with adai.

Note:Make this chutney little spicy for good taste.use little water to grind the chutney as chayote itself has lots of moisture.dont over cook the vegetable.can also substitute green chilli with red chillies.
