We often include sweet potato in our diet and the Sweet Potato Tikki is our all time favorite. I also like to include Sweet Potato Raita in my lunch. We mostly buy the Garnet Sweet Potato variety but this time V bought Japanese Sweet Potato. This variety of sweet potato is mildly sweet, thick and the texture was similar to regular potato. So, tried making a Sweet Potato masala and served as a side for Rasam & Rice. Spicy Sweet Potato Masala turned out tasty and we all liked it so much. Spicy Sweet Potato Recipe

Spicy Sweet Potato Masala Recipe

Ingredients

  1. Japanese Sweet Potato   2 Cup (Cooked & Chopped)
  2. Onion    1 medium(chopped)
  3. Green Chilli   2(finely chopped)
  4. Curry leaves     1 sprig
  5. Chilli Powder    1 tsp
  6. Turmeric powder   1/4 tsp
  7. Salt     to taste
  8. Cilantro     2 tbsp(finely chopped)
  9. Shredded Coconut   1 Tbsp
  10. Oil / Coconut oil    2 tbsp
  11. Mustard seeds    1/2 tsp
  12. Urad dal    1/2 tbsp

Method

  • Wash and Sweet Potato into 3 or 4 pieces and put it in a pressure cooker add enough water, 1/2 tsp salt and pressure cook for 2-3 whistles or steam cook until it is cooked soft(20 Minutes).
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds allow to pop and then add urad dal and fry till golden brown.
  • Then add chopped onions, green chillies & curry leaves(if using) and saute for 2-3 minutes.
  • After that add chopped sweet potato, 1/2 tsp salt and turmeric powder and stir fry well.
  • Then add chilli powder and saute till the masala mixes well and cook covered for a minute. 
  • Open the lid, Stir fry nicely and add shredded coconut and mix well then add chopped cilantro mix well and switch off the stove.
  • If needed, squeeze few drops of lemon juice, mix well and serve hot.
