Today's recipe is Authentic Indian Sweet - Poli / Obattu but made it Healthy with Whole Wheat Flour and also with Interesting Filling, Black eye Bean-Jaggery Filling. My Kids love Poli and this time wanted to make it healthy so tried with whole wheat flour and black eye bean combo. I even tried kozhukattai with this filling and it also tasted so delicious so friends plz give it a try am sure u n ur family will love it. Obattu with whole wheat flour also turned so soft and its very easy to roll when compared with maida. Now to the healthy and yummy Whole Wheat Poli...

  • Take a wide bowl, add flour, turmeric powder, salt and oil and mix well n crumble it and using water knead it to a soft, smooth and pliable dough.
  • The dough should be little loose n soft than the poori dough but not too flexible like chapathi dough.

  • Cook in medium high heat and keep stirring till the moisture dried up and the BE Beans-jaggery mixture starts rolling the sides of the pan,
  • Then add cardamom powder and give a stir and turn off the stove.
  • Allow this mixture to cool completely.
  • Once it cools down, divide the mixture in to 10 small lemons sized balls and now the filling is ready to stuff.

  • Now divide the kneaded wheat flour dough in to 10 equal sized balls.
  • Likewise divide the poornam also in to 10 small ball shaped and keep aside.
  • Using rolling pan or firm base, take one wheat flour balls and gently press or roll to a 3" disc and keep one filling in the center and bring all the edges together and seal it by pressing all the ends together.
  • now again roll the stuffed ball to 6" thick  or 8" thin poli .
  • Do the same for all dough and filling .
  • Now heat a tawa/griddle, smear ghee/oil and toast one poli on medium high flame.
  • After 1-2 minutes flip the poli and cook till done...brown spots appear on both sides of the poli.
  • Remove from tawa/griddle, smear some more ghee on the hot poli.
  • Yummy Puran polis are ready to enjoy !!!  Enjoy it Hot or Warm.

If u have left over filling u can make kozhukattai or Suzhiyam or Boorelu.
Instead of black eye bean u can also use other legumes like channa/chickpeas, Red chori/Thattai payir, etc.
I made the poli using oil only, still it tasted so delicious and also its completely Vegan.
