Green Onion Chutney
Green Onion Chutney Recipe
Prep Time : 2 Minutes | Cook Time : 4-5 Minutes
Recipe Category : Chutneys/Side Dish | Serves : 4

Ingredients
  1. Spring Onion/Green Onion     1 Bunch
  2. Grated Coconut      1/2 Cup
  3. Pottukadalai/Roasted Gram Dal   1/4 Cup
  4. Green Chilli   5 or 6
  5. Ginger   small piece
  6. Garlic   1 clove
  7. Oil    2-3 tsp
  8. Salt    to taste
  9. Water   1/4 cup or as needed to grind chutney
For Tadka
  1. Coconut Oil   2 tsp
  2. Mustard seeds   1/2 tsp
  3. Urad Dal  1/4 tsp
  4. Curry leaves   few
  5. Hing   a pinch
Notes:
No need to saute coconut for long time, just stir fry with the onions for few seconds then turn off the heat.
This chutney is similar to coconut chutney and has less shelf life, the left over chutney needs to be refrigerated Or try to finish the chutney in one go.
Green Chillies which we get are not spicy variety, so I added 5 you can add to your desired spice level.
Use fresh green onions, discard the yellow or dried parts of green onions.
Adding garlic is optional, you can skip it but add ginger for nice flavor and taste. 

Method
  • Wash green onions, cut off the roots and chop them roughly.
  • Heat oil in a pan, when its hot add chopped spring onion, green chilli, ginger, garlic and saute for 1-2 minutes.
  • Then add roasted gram dal, grated coconut and give a stir and switch off the stove.
  • Allow the onion-coconut mix to cool down completely before grinding.
  • Once cooled, add to the blender jar, add enough salt and water grind it to a fine coarse chutney.
  • Transfer the ground green onion chutney to a serving bowl and add tadka to it.
  • That's it, Tasty Green Onion Chutney ready. Serve as an accompaniment with Idli/Dosa. I served with Instant Oats Paniyaram.

shredded coconut give a nice stir and switch off the stove. After cooling transfer everything to a blender jar, add salt and water.

Grind it to a desired consistency and add tadka to the Chutney. Tasty Green Onion Chutney Ready to serve.
