Vengaya Sambar / Onion Sambar

Onion Sambar / Vengaya Sambar, very tasty, flavorful and quick sambar recipe. If u have cooked dal in  hand then it takes only 10 minutes to make this sambar. This is my version of Vengaya sambar with very simple ingredients. Here i used both small onions/pearl onions n onions but for more taste n flavor use only small onions. This tastes great with rice, dosa, paniyaram, Ven Pongal etc.

Ingredients
  1. Tuvar dal / Toor dal / Thuvaram paruppu         1/4 cup
  2. Pearl Onions/chinna Vengayam                 20 no.)peel n roughly chopped)
  3. Tomato               1 no.(chopped)
  4. Turmeric powder      1/4 tsp
  5. Sambar Powder          1 tsp
  6. Tamarind paste           1/4 tsp( dilute in 1/4 cup water)
  7. Salt              to taste
  8. Cilantro              3-4 tbsp (finely chopped)
To Temper
  • Oil                 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds      1/2 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds         1/2 tsp

  • Hing                      1/4 tsp
  • Dry Red chili        2 no. broken
  • Curry leaves          1 or 2 sprig
Method
  • Pressure cook toor dal with 3-4 cups of water n turmeric powder for 3-4 whistles, then after pressure cool down, lightly mash the dal and keep aside.
  • Then heat oil in a pan/kadai, add mustard seeds wait till it splutter then add the other tempering ingredients one by one, fry well and add onions saute for 1-2 minutes.
  • After that add tomatoes saute till soft and add the cooked n mashed dal, enough salt and little water(desired consistency) and sambar powder, stir well and bring it to boil.
  • Once it starts boiling add tamarind paste and boil for another 1-2 minutes.
  • Lastly add some chopped cilantro and turn off the stove.
