Onion Tart With Mustard N Fennel

We are entering in to the Fifth edition of The Gourmet Seven, and for this month we decided to bake some Pies/Tarts/Galattes/Quiches from Smitten Kitten. I have chosen a very flavorful n yummy Onion Tart With Mustard and Fennel two main reason to pick this recipe, one fennel is my fav spice n i love adding it in all my cooking and the other one i don't have tart pan! wanna buy one soon :) I rarely eat pies/tarts at restaurants and never thought to make one at home that too from the scratch. For this i would like to thank the members of The Gourmet Seven. Yes, without this group n their unique themes i would have not tried such recipes from the scratch. Thanks to those creative brains and i am so proud to be a part of this group!!
This was my first experiment with tarts, and this base/pastry was new to me...with yeast-egg combo. Honestly, i didn't like the smell of the dough with yeast n egg. I thought that my choice of recipe wasn't good this time:( But i didn't drop my work n proceeded  with some hope and instead of cheese I sprinkle Tandoori masala powder on top. To my surprise the final product was too good n it doesn't  have any yeast/egg smell. It tasted bit spicy and yummy like savory bread/pizza. My H and the elder one loved it. My kid asked me Y u made pizza spicy didn't add cheese?! My choice of recipe was successful and liked by my Family. The memories behind this creation will be in my mind forever :)
You could also add some veggies like mushroom, cabbage, carrots, spinach along with onions and make it a wholesome n yummy flavorful Tart. Now to the recipe....

Recipe Source:Smitten Kitchen
Ingredients
  1. All purpose Flour  1 and 1/2 cup + as needed to knead dough
  2. Instant Yeast    2 tsp
  3. Warm Water    1/2 cup
  4. Large Egg   1 no.
  5. Olive Oil   1 tbsp
  6. Salt     2 tsp
  7. Yellow Onion    4large (sliced)
  8. Extra virgin Olive oil    3 tbsp
  9. Fennel seeds    2 tsp
  10. Green chilli    2 no.s(finely chopped)
  11. or
  12. Pepper Powder    to taste
  13. Parmigiano-Reggiano     1/2 cup grated
  14. Dijon Mustard 1 tbsp
Method
  • In a small mixing bowl, add egg, water n olive oil..mix with fork n keep aside.
  • Now take a large bowl, add flour, salt n instant yeast and combine well and make a dent in the center and pour the egg mixture and mix well.
  • Transfer the dough onto a well floured surface and knead it well for 5 minutes, to a smooth n pliable/elastic dough.
  • After that, grease the bowl with a tsp of oil and keep the dough and cover with a cling wrap and keep it in a warm place for 1and1/2 hours.
  • Meanwhile, slice the onion and get ready ready with the onion fennel stuffing...
  • Heat oil in a large skillet, add fennel seeds wait till it pop up and then add chilies n onion and saute for a minute.
  • Then turn the heat to medium and leave it till the onion gets caramelized.
  • Once it done, allow it cool completely.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degree Fahrenheit.
  • After one n half an hour, the dough must have double in its size...now take the dough on to a floured surface and knead for a minute or two to deflate.
  • Then pat the dough either on a 9" tart pan or a large heavy baking sheet into a 15 by 12 inch dough.Prick the dough with fork.
  • And Spread the dough with Dijon mustard and add caramelized onions, sprinkle cheese or spices(of your choice).
  • Then Bake it for 30-35 minutes(mine done in 27minutes) or until crust turns light golden brown.

Notes:
Instead of preparing the dough from scratch you can also use puff pastry sheet for base and proceed with onion fennel filling.

This is off to The Gourmet Seven and do drop by other Gourmets, Veena, Vardhini, Radhika, Kaveri, Anusha, Anamika to know what they Cooking for this month's Pies/Tarts/Galattes.
