Pottukadalai Chutney / Roasted Gram Dal Chutney - Easy Chutney Recipe

Today's recipe is one quick & easy to make chutney that pairs well with many South Indian breafast or dinner recipes like Idli/Dos, Pongal, Chapathi, Paniyaram, Adai, etc., My Maternal mom makes this chutney for my Grand pa since he does not like coconut chutney or kurma recipes. So this kadalai chutney is his favorite sides for Idli and my favorite too. For today's Tamizhar Samyal Tuesday event by Nalini, I like to share this simple and tasty chutney.

Total Time : 10 minutes
Serves   3

Ingredients
  1. Roasted gram dal/Pottukadalai    1/2 cup
  2. Grated Coconut    1 tbsp (fresh or frozen)
  3. Garlic   1 clove
  4. Dry Red chilli      2 or 3 no.
  5. Salt    1/4 tsp or to taste
  6. Pepper corns     3 no.(optional)
To Temper
  1. Oil    1/2 tsp
  2. Mustard seeds     1/4 tsp
  3. Urad dal    1/4 tsp
  4. Curry leaves    few

Method
  • In a blender take all the ingredients from Roasted gram dal to pepper corns and using 1/4 cup water grind it to a fine coarse paste. (i forgot to keep pepper corns in the below picture but i added it in the blender)
  • After that transfer it to a serving bowl, add little more water to adjust the chutney to little pouring consistency.(slightly liquid)
  • Then heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds let it pop, then add urad dal roast till golden brown and finally add some curry leaves and fry. Add this tempering to the chutney.
  • That's it..Yummy Roasted gram dal chutney ready. We had it with Brown rice Ragi Idly & podi.

Notes:
For picture sake i diluted the chutney in the last after taking pictures.
This chutney tastes great if its made spicy. For medium or less spicy use 2 chillies and also try to use dry red chillies.
For a healthy option, you can also skip coconut and make it as a plain kadalai chutney.
My grandma add a small piece of tamarind while grinding.
