Dosa Toast / Savory French Toast / Quick Bread Toast Using Idli/Dosa Batter

I wanted to try this Dosa Toast for long time, recently saw this recipe on my Friend Manjula's Desi Fiesta Blog and was so much tempted and tried it immediately. Glad that I tried it, dosa toast was so delicious and my family members loved it and now this is my lil' one's most favorite breakfast. Thank You Manju for this wonderful recipe. If you are looking for an easy & quick recipe to make use of the left over idli/dosa batter and bread slices this is one of the best choice of recipe. To pair with this dosa toast I made coconut chutney, the best ever combo. Now off to the recipe..

Ingredients
  1. Idli/Dosa Batter      2 cups
  2. Bread slices       8 no.s ( i used honey wheat bread)
  3. Onion         1 medium(finely chopped)
  4. Green chilli    1 no.(finely chopped)
  5. Ginger           1/2 tsp (finely chopped)
  6. Cilantro/Coriander leaves    2 tbsp(finely chopped)
  7. Oil        1 tsp + to make dosa toast
  8. Mustard seeds      1/4 tsp
  9. Urad dal        1/4 tsp
  10. Curry leaves     1 sprig(finely chopped)

Method
  • Simply Season the batter using the given ingredients(except bread slices) like we do for Paniyaram.
  • In breif - Heat 1 tsp oil in a tempering pan, add mustard seeds wait till it splutter. then add urad dal and fry till golden brown and then add curry leaves, ginger, green chilli, onions and saute for 1-2 minutes. Lastly add cilantro, stir well and transfer the tempering to the idly/dosa batter.
  • That's it now the batter is ready to make dosa toast.
  • If u want u can trim the edges of each bread slices and keep ready.
  • Heat tawa/griddle, when its get hot smear with few drops of oil then take one slice bread dip one side gently in the dosa batter and put that side on the tawa and spoon the batter to the top/undipped portion and drizzle oil around.
  • Cook in medium heat (if u want u can cook with lid closed for few seconds) after that turn other side and cook till the toast turns crisp and cook on all sides.
  • Do repeat the same method for remaining batter and bread slices. If u want u can also sprinkle the dosa toast with idly podi or any spice powder.
  • That's it..Simple and yummy Dosa Toast Ready. Serve hot with ketchup/spicy sauce/coconut chutney or as such.
