Peas Paratha / Peas Stuffed Paratha

Peas is the one of the veg that my kids do not eat. They even like Bitter gourd but did not know the reason why they dislike Peas. I love peas and Mr.V also do not complain with peas recipes but the kids they will not even taste it. They do not eat peas in any dish, even in their favorite Mutter Paneer Masala. I have experimented in so many dishes but, they constantly say big NO to peas. The I stopped compelling them to eat peas and sometimes they like to eat Peas in mashed form. So I rarely make Paneer Peas Paratha for them and the Sprouted Peas Paratha is my favorite. Recently I prepared Green Peas kachori and they loved Peas Kachori a lot and the elder thought it as some green chutney. He asked me How you spread the chutney inside the poori, please show me I want to see it, how the chutney gets into the round poori...LOL..this question reminded me of the Potato Masal Bonda comedy :p Then I prepared this Peas Paratha with the same filling which I used for Green Peas Kachori. Without any complaint they finished the paratha with yogurt. Now off to the recipe..

Preparation Time :  15 minutes
Cooking Time : 10 minutes + 20 minutes
Makes about   8 Parathas
Ingredients
For Dough
  1. Whloe wheat flour        2 and 1/2 cups
  2. Salt        to taste
  3. Water      as needed
  4. Oil      1-2 tsp
Take a mixing bowl, add flour and salt mix well. Using water make it to to smooth dough, then add oil and knead for a minute and cover it and keep aside for at least 30 minutes.
For Peas Filling
  1. Fresh or Frozen green peas  1 Cup
  2. Green chillies  2
  3. Ginger    1" piece
  4. Cilantro    6 stems(use leaves leaves & tender stems alone)
  5. Roasted cumin powder   1/4 tsp
  6. Asafoetida/Hing  a generous pinch
  7. Turmeric powder    a pinch
  8. Garam masala powder     1/4 tsp
  9. Salt   to taste
  10. Oil    2 -3 tsp
  11. Cumin seeds   1/4 tsp

Method
  • In a blender, take cilantro, ginger & green chilli and blend it to a coarse paste without using water.
  • Then microwave peas with enough water for 2 minutes and then drain water and blend the peas to a coarse paste and keep aside.
  • Now heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds allow to splutter  and then add ground chilli-ginger-cilantro and saute for a minute.
  • After that add ground peas and stir fry for a minute.
  • And then add cumin powder, garam masala, turmeric powder and stir fry for 1-2 minutes or until the moisture dries.
  • That's it..Peas filling ready allow to cool completely before stuffing.
  • Once it cool down completely, start preparing parathas.
  • Knead the resting dough for few seconds and divide the dough into 8 ping pong sized ballls n the peas filling in to lemon sized 8-10 balls, take one dough ball, and roll it to 3" (dia ) and keep 1 peas filling and seal the edges together and again gently roll it like regular chapathi (with less pressure). Do the same for the remaining dough n filling.
  • Heat a tawa/griddle, toast the parathas on both sides till turn light golden brown...drizzle some oil on n around the parathas.
  • After that remove from the tawa, Peas Paratha is ready. Serve hot with pickle or raitha.

Notes:
This time while grinding I added extra water so the peas mixture was so moist and I couldn't roll and get neat round parathas, later felt that I could have added some 1-2 tsp besan flour or roasted gram dal powder to balance the moisture. So if you felt the ground peas mixture has more moisture then try adding it.

This is off to Priya's Vegan Thursday.
