Pumpkin Dal / Yellow Pumpkin Dal Curry

Hi friends, Hope you all had enjoyed your weekend and wish you all a great week ahead. Today's recipe is very simple and comfort Dal With Yellow Pumpkin. This dal and Pumpkin Poriyal are the only two recipes which i know to cook with Yellow pumpkin. Really this dal goes well with both rice and rotis. Less spicy and tasty dal.

  1. Tuvar Dal/Toor Dal    less than 1/4 cup
  2. Yellow Pumpkin     1 cup(chopped in to bite size pieces)
  3. Onion     1 medium(chopped)
  4. Tomato    2 medium(chopped)
  5. Green chili     3no.s
  6. Garlic       3-4 fat cloves
  7. Turmeric powder     1/4 tsp
  8. Salt      to taste
  9. Hing       a generous pinch
To Temper
  1. Oil/ghee     1 tbsp
  2. Dry Red chili    3 no.s(broken)
  3. Mustard seeds    1/2 tsp
  4. Cumin seeds     1/2 tsp
  5. Fennel seeds    1/4 tsp
  6. Pepper corns    3-4 no.s
  7. Curry leaves    1 sprig
  8. Onion   1/4 cup(sliced)
  9. Sambar Powder     1/2 -1 tsp
  10. Cilantro    3-4 sprig(finely chopped)
Method
  • Wash and chop pumpkin into bite size pieces with or without skin( i used with skin only) and also chop onion, tomatoes and keep ready.
  • In a pressure cooker, add dal, pumpkin, onion, tomato, garlic, green chili, turmeric powder and pressure cook for 2-3 whistles and wait till the pressure cools down.
  • After that open the pressure cooker, add enough salt, hing and using spoon( i used Matthu) mash all the veg n dal well.
  • Now heat oil/ghee in a tempering pan, add mustard seeds, cumin, fennel, peper corns and wait till it splutter then add red chili, onion, curry leaves, sambar powder and saute for 1-2 minutes n lastly add cilantro and add it to the mashed pumpkin dal.
  • That't Pumpkin Dal Curry ready. Serve Hot with Rotis/Rice!
