Aloo Kurma / Potato Kurma


This is my mom's recipe and my most most favorite kurma and i love it with soft idlis., the best combo. Most of the weekend, Saturday breakfast she makes idly with this kurma. So flavorful and tasty kurma, if u haven't tried kurma with idly please try this Potato Kurma/Aloo Kurma. I am sure u will love it, amny of my friends have tried this n send me the feedback, that they loved it to the core. This kurma even suits well with poori/chapathi also. The recipe as follows...


Ingredients
  1. Aloo/ Potato    2-3 no.s
  2. coconut   1/2 cup 
  3. onion  1 small size (cut in length wise)
  4. dalia   1/2 or 1 tbsp (optional)
  5. green chilli  2no.s(cut slit open)
  6. mustard seeds   1 tsp
  7. oil  2tsp
  8. salt as needed
To roast and grind:
  1. Onion   1
  2. tomato  1
  3. greenchilles  8no.s
  4. ginger   1"
  5. garlic   2-3 flakes
  6. fennel seeds   1 tsp
  7. poppy seeds   1+1/2 tsp
  8. clove  2 no.s
  9. cinnamon  1 small piece     

Method 

Boil potatoes ,peel and lightly mash into few pieces and keep aside.
Roughly chop onions and tomato .
Heat a tsp of oil add,fennel and poppy seeds,clove and cinnamon allow it to splutter 
then add ginger,garlic,green chilies saute lightly and add onion and tomato.
don't want to fry them nicely just roast slightly with little salt .
Allow them to cool and grind it along with coconut and dalia
Take a kadai add a tsp oil ,heat it,add mustard seeds when they pop add cut onions n green chili, few curry leaves and saute lightly. 
Now add the boiled potatoes and 1/2 tsp turmeric powder stir fry it for few minutes.
then add the grounded masala paste and fry it for 2 minutes and add 1and 1/2cup of water and necessary salt. 

Let them boil for 10 minutes or till the raw smell of the masala goes off.
At last add some chopped coriander leaves and turn off the stove
Now the Aloo kurma is ready to serve with idly,dosa.
This is an excellent combination for Idly and dosa..

Notes:
Use only green chili for this Kurma. 
Adding dalia is optional but it gives nice consistency if ur coconut is doesn't blend well.
Instead of dalia/pottu kadalai u can also use cashew nuts.

  2. I can't wait to try this. My love of cooking comes from my Grandmother, although I have chosen more complex and flavorful foods. I can remember her home cooking and the wonderful smells. Looking at this recipe, I can say, without hesitation, that Grandma would approve! Thank you.
